I’m a feeler. I consider myself highly sensitive and intuitive. Even tests have shown that trait. I can walk into a room and immediately be consumed with unseen emotions and the feelings of others. It’s sometimes very uncomfortable, and I can allow it to control my mood. However, I’m learning to use that “gift” to be fruitful. But I must rely solely on the Holy Spirit.
It isn’t easy. If I’m not careful, I can take other’s emotions and mannerisms personally. And when I do, I withdraw, and most likely, act awkward and insecure. It can cause unwanted and manifested feelings that come only from Satan.
Emotions are unreliable! Unless…
Our emotions are God-given. They are apart of who we are. They help us discern and make decisions. They help us be compassionate and given. They help us be good parents and friends. They help us love others. They help us heal the sick and prophecy. But if used wrongly, and we allow them to become an idol, we act out emotionally, instead of godly. Instead of wisdom, we become fools. And the will of God isn’t being done.
Emotions can be manipulated very easily. Our will, instead, takes the wheel. And we cannot rely on our own wisdom…because without God, we are not wise, at all.
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
Don’t let that someone be you!!
I’ve done and allowed this my entire life. I’ve been that “someone”. I’ve acted out because my gut “told” me something. Growing up, “go with your gut” was, and still is, a humanistic rule. And it got me in trouble, and caused a lot of pain for others, and myself.
But I should never!
Think about it, the gut is full of bacteria and rotted food. I need to be listening to my heart! My heart is life-giving. When my heart is aligned with His, I can do amazing things in the name of Jesus! Emotions are good, but only through our sinful nature, they become very bad. Look to God!
Making an idol of our feelings can manifest resentment, anger, hurtful words and acts. They can destroy relationships and careers. They can play out behind the wheel of a car, or on social media. They can give bad reputations and negative identity.
When we manage our emotions, we become the hands and feet of Christ. We can heal what is broken. We become life givers, and reflectors of His Light! We can be servants, all in the name of Jesus. And we can be used by God in ways never imaginable.
How amazing is that? How awesome is God!
